Notes for H
ENRY ELLIOTT : Henry came from Canada in the early 1860's, he was around 20 years old. His family was in the lumber business. The company that his family owned in Canada was shipping timber/lumber all over the Great Lakes by the early 1800's. Henry knew much about logging, wood working, and about ship building… These skills he passed down to his sons and grandsons…. We do not have any links to this part of family beyond this. We do know that many times, it was clearly stated that Henry's father or grandfather had married an Indian Chief's daughter (Huron maybe ) - the wedding present was a very large area of land in Canada. Henry ended up in Ohio after a few unfortunate events -- Family tradition states that after Henry entered a high-stakes poker game (while making a delivery of timber) here at the port of Toledo, and lost; Henry ended up losing barges, timber and everything else. Henry hid out here for a while not knowing what to do; and being too ashamed to return… His older brothers, names unknown came to look for him, thinking foul play. When they found Henry they told him never to return - everyone else thought that he had been killed. Apparently his father was aging and it had caused a very big strain on the family. Henry stayed In Ohio and never returned. He had 6 children; three boys and three girls. Henry's son, LaFayette Elliott, died early in life - from an accident, caused by a fall from a horse. He was 33 years old (he had no children). John Elliott died of accident also, when he was 56. (It is believed he was childless also) Henry's daugthers Goldie, Myrtle(Murite) and Euphemia all married, some of the having children.

HARLES ELLIOTT : Charles was born in 1882. He knew much about logging, wood working; he did cabinet and furniture making; following the profession and skills taught to h im by his father. The family also owned a farm in Defiance, Ohio. He also worked in the lumber business also and had a contract with and unknown timber company to do work in northern Michigan. Charles lived a long life and died in 1963. Charles meet and married, Mrs. Pheobe VanWagner, in around 1910-15.… Phoebe had several children from her first marriage to Albert VanWagner. Pheobe came from a well-known family in the Defiance, OH area. Her father was Captain Robert Chisty; he served in the Civil War, ( Robert's parents were early settelers in Ohio). Pheobe's first husband died from an "accident of sorts". Charles and Pheobe had 3 children, three boys. Thier son, Denver died of an accident very early in life. Apparently while boys were playing wild west when it happened; they were on horseback when a gun they were playing with accidently went off - The gun a 22 revolver was not unloaded after being used. Denver was just 8 years old at the time. It was no wonder that Denver's grandfather Henry Elliott, that was still living when this tragedy happened became a volenteer caretaker of the local Cemetery; he continued this until he died in 1931.

Notes for G
AROLD ELLIOTT : He was my father. He was raised on the family farm. I still recall the stories about - "Throwing chickens off the barn roof to see which ones would fly". Those were perhaps my favorite. He learned many skills while growing up on the farm. He also became knowledgeable about logging, woodcraft, and wood finishing; following the trade of his father and grandfather… His skills in falling timber was nothing short of amazing! He stated college then quit; Volunteered for service before the our formal declaration of war (WWII). In a short time became a Drill Sergeant (Master Sergeant) – He received training in deserts of California (Death Valley mainly) in preparation to go to North Africa , but did not go. He then went to Fitzsimons Army Hospital, in Colorado, for about 6 months and became Surgical Technician (Medic) One of the, “Red Cross Guys”. After about 2 years of training “new recruits”, in desert maneuvers, they then sent him to the Pacific. His main job was to evacuate and treat the wounded. He also had an "Expert" rating with the 30 caliber machine-gun; and was the Company's, sharpshooter. He made numerous "beach-head" landings - at places such as Layte Gulf, Okinawa and Peleiu - to name a few. He survived through 3 beach-head landings (which he said was “hell on earth”) The only injury he had during the whole time he served in the War - was cutting himself while attempting to open a can of beans with a knife (I do find this a little amusing as he also did). He won numerous medals of commendation… He served close to 7 years. After the war his initial intent was to finish his schooling and become a pharmacist. But when he arrived in the states, he found his mother was deathly ill. He went home to the family farm to help care for her; she died of cancer in 1949. It was around this time that he also married his first wife. They were only married a very short time. The stress of the war and his mother illness and her passing was very hard; they were divorced after a few years. Garold then moved to Toledo, where he became a foreman, for Chevrolet. It was at this time that he was introduced to my mother. She came from a very well-known family. Her Great Grandparents (Henry and Mary Bowlus) were early pioneers of Sandusky County OH. " .. After being granted close to 1,000 acres of land by President James Monroe, the Bowlus families (party of 28) left Maryland and came to the frontier. One of Sandusky's earliest and most distinguished settlers was the Bowlus family." Garold went into business for himself offering services as painter and refinisher; finally he ended up as head of department of local hospital here in Toledo, painting and refinishing - what else. Sadly he never did accomplish his dreams of becoming a pharmacist. He always put the needs of other first. In the mid 1950's he became acquainted with then and married my mother. They were married for over 40 years. They had 8 children - of which I am one of
