Notes for GAROLD
ELLIOTT
:
He was my father. He was raised on the family farm. I still recall the stories
about - "Throwing chickens off the barn roof to see which ones would fly".
Those were perhaps my favorite. He learned many skills while growing up on the
farm. He also became knowledgeable about logging, woodcraft, and wood finishing;
following the trade of his father and grandfather… His skills in falling
timber was nothing short of amazing! He stated college then quit; Volunteered
for service before the our formal declaration of war (WWII). In a short time
became a Drill Sergeant (Master Sergeant) – He received training in deserts
of California (Death Valley mainly) in preparation to go to North Africa , but
did not go. He then went to Fitzsimons Army Hospital, in Colorado, for about
6 months and became Surgical Technician (Medic) One of the, “Red Cross Guys”.
After about 2 years of training “new recruits”, in desert maneuvers, they then
sent him to the Pacific. His main job was to evacuate and treat the wounded.
He also had an "Expert" rating with the 30 caliber machine-gun; and was the
Company's, sharpshooter. He made numerous "beach-head" landings - at places
such as Layte Gulf, Okinawa and Peleiu - to name a few. He survived through
3 beach-head landings (which he said was “hell on earth”) The only injury he
had during the whole time he served in the War - was cutting himself while attempting to open a can of beans with a knife (I do find this a little amusing as he also did). He won numerous medals
of commendation… He served close to 7 years. After the war his initial intent
was to finish his schooling and become a pharmacist. But when he arrived in
the states, he found his mother was deathly ill. He went home to the family
farm to help care for her; she died of cancer in 1949. It was around this time
that he also married his first wife. They were only married a very short time.
The stress of the war and his mother illness and her passing was very hard;
they were divorced after a few years. Garold then moved to Toledo, where he
became a foreman, for Chevrolet. It was at this time that he was introduced to
my mother. She came from a very well-known family. Her Great Grandparents (Henry and Mary Bowlus) were early pioneers of Sandusky County OH. " .. After being granted close to 1,000 acres of land by President James Monroe, the Bowlus families (party of 28) left Maryland and came to the frontier. One of Sandusky's earliest and most distinguished settlers was the Bowlus family." Garold went into business for himself offering services as painter and refinisher; finally he ended up as head of department of local hospital here in Toledo, painting and refinishing - what else. Sadly he never did accomplish his dreams of becoming a pharmacist. He always put the needs of other first. In the mid 1950's he became acquainted with then and married my mother. They were married for over 40 years. They had 8 children - of which I am one of
